All short film admirers and enthusiasts got their money’s worth again this year. The yearly Short Film Festival in Hamburg is a cult experience, and there is almost nowhere else in the world where you can get this kind of overview and variety of outstanding productions. Funny, jarring, anarchic, thought-provoking – the list is incredibly diverse. The filmmakers, surprisingly many of whom appeared in Hamburg, all wanted to try out new themes and in some cases dared to test out new forms.

One of my personal favorites was The Upper Story (Bovenkamer/Oberstübchen) from the Dutch filmmaker André Maat. A very clever, inscrutable film on the puzzling processes in our brain (Oberstübchen). The director has kindly made the film available on Vimeo. The actor is Bert Hana.
